Get Involved


Badminton

Vanbrugh's Badminton team play 30 minute matches every Sunday and training is held every Saturday at 10am. The team is dedicated, has had many successes throughout the year and is captained this year by Joe Devonport and Blonnie Walsh.

Basketball

Last year saw the re-establishment of Vanbrugh's Basketball team and they're eager to make their mark. Our captain, Adam Lewis, is determined to get a great team out and welcomes anyone of any ability. The team are particularly looking for girls as a full squad needs a minimum of 2 girls. Training is currently 6-7pm on Wednesdays and their is inter-college training 3-4pm on Mondays.
Vanbrugh Basketball won the Autumn college sport league! Well done!

Cricket

During the summer term Cricket is played weekly between the colleges. This year's teams are captained by James Robinson (Firsts) and Phil Beattie (Seconds) and training is held once a week before matches.

Matches are held at 5:30 Mondays-Fridays in the Summer term on the 22 Acres Grass pitch.

Darts

Vanbrugh Darts has consistently succeeded in college sport, winning the overall Darts league last year! This strong team are always looking for new faces so get involved! This year's team captains are Alan Belmore and Chris West.

Congratulations to the Darts team who won the Autumn league having had no losses!

There is regular practice in V-bar and matches are held weekly across the bars on campus. So if you're looking for a sport which allows you to have a cheeky pint from V-bar at the same time, Vanbrugh Darts is for you!

Football

Vanbrugh Football is one of the most successful college sports teams at York. With over 40 guys turning up to training on a weekly basis and 4 teams, it's no wonder they were able to send 2 teams to Dublin this Easter to take part in Doxbridge 2011 (the sports tournament vs colleges from Durham, Oxford and Cambridge). Not only were we the only college to send two teams for any one sport, but the guys did us proud and brought back the Doxbridge Football trophy!

Hockey

College hockey is mixed and plays matches every Sunday morning. Vanbrugh hockey trains once a week at the Sport centre during the Autumn and Spring term and is captained by Mike Ward. As of next year we'll be looking to get as many people involved as possible as this team has the potential to be very successful so do get in contact if you're interested. No experience necessary, although please bring your own stick if you have one.

Netball

Popular in school, netball is an easy way for girls to get involved with their college and play some sports! At college level you are able to have some fun, without the intensity experienced at university level.
During the Autumn and Spring terms Vanbrugh Netball play matches every Sunday and Wednesday, with training once a week. The netball captain is Amie Evans. If you're interested in playing, please do get in touch! We are particularly looking for shooters for next season.

Pool

Vanbrugh Pool are an asset to the college's sports teams, this year being captained by Chris Marr. With a pool table in Vanbrugh JCR (ask at V bar if you encounter any problems) it's the perfect sport for those who enjoy an even more relaxed atmosphere and a drink with friends.

Rounders

As an old favourite to many, Rounders is a great way to get outside, take a break from revision and enjoy the summer sun. Our Rounders captain is Meg Phillips and training takes place at 16:30 before each week's match.

Rugby

From Autumn 2012 college Rugby will be played on campus for the first time. More details at the start of next season.

Squash

A quick, fun game, squash is a great way to get involved with college sport and get those points from the college. This year's captain is Riz Azhar and there is training once a week.

Table Tennis

Table tennis is one of the more uncommon sports played by Vanbrites but importantly contributes towards the college's points all the same. Matches are played on Fridays, making table tennis a brilliant way to round of any stressful week. This year's captain is David Potter and anyone of any ability is welcome.

Tennis

Vanbrugh Tennis can confortably claim the title for the best college tennis team after winning the league this summer for the 2nd time in a row. Taking on the captaincy this year is Henry Pugg, and he's determined to keep up the success. All abilities are welcome so get yourself down to the tennis courts when summer comes!

Matches are approx. 45 mins and played on Mondays at different times and venues.

Volleyball

A great sport, and one which comes with its holiday benefits, volleyball at Vanbrugh is one of the ways you can help your college get to the top of the league tables. This year's captain is Marieme Samb and she's eager to get as many Vanbrites involved as possible, no experience necessary.
